When it comes to planning your dream wedding, there are so many decisions to make. There’s everything from your venue and decor to which traditions you want to include or skip—and that’s just the start. But one of the decisions I find that couples often struggle with most is whether to have a first look or wait until the ceremony.

The truth is, there’s no right or wrong answer. I always remind my couples that it’s all about what feels best for you. So, if you’re still on the fence, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s walk through the pros and cons of both options so you can feel confident and excited about your decision.

What is a First Look?

Traditionally, couples wouldn’t see each other until they walked down the aisle. But wedding traditions are constantly evolving, and so many couples are now choosing moments that feel more personal and authentic to them—like the first look.

A first look is a private moment shared between the couple before the ceremony, usually captured by me as your photographer. It gives you the chance to see each other, calm any pre-wedding jitters, and just soak up the emotions of the day. Some couples even use this time to read their vows in private.

That said, a first look isn’t for everyone. Many couples still love the tradition and anticipation of waiting until the ceremony for that unforgettable first glance.

Benefits of Having a First Look

There are so many perks to doing a first look. The biggest one? You actually get more time together on your wedding day. It’s such a sweet chance to slow down, take a breath, and really soak it all in before the day gets busy. From my side as your photographer, it also makes the timeline so much smoother. We can knock out your couple portraits and wedding party photos before the ceremony, which means you’ll get to spend more time at cocktail hour hanging out with your guests instead of rushing through photos.

And honestly, it helps calm the nerves, too. You’ll feel more relaxed in front of the camera, and if you want, it’s the perfect moment to read your vows privately, just the two of you.

The Potential Cons of Doing a First Look

As much as I love first looks, I’ll be the first to say they’re not for everyone. Some couples have always pictured that big, emotional aisle reveal, and if that’s been your dream, a first look might take away from that suspense and excitement in front of your guests. It also means starting the day earlier, so hair, makeup, and getting ready all have to happen sooner to fit photos in before the ceremony.

For some couples, that trade-off just doesn’t feel worth it, and that’s totally okay. At the end of the day, it’s about choosing what feels right for you.

Why Waiting Until the Ceremony Might Be Right for You

For a lot of couples, nothing beats that moment of seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony. The build-up, the music, the walk down the aisle, the excitement from your guests—it all makes the reveal feel so powerful. Honestly, it’s often one of the most emotional parts of the entire day. If you’ve always dreamed of locking eyes at the altar for the very first time, then holding on to that tradition might be the perfect choice for you.

How to Decide What’s Right for You?

So, how do you know which option is right for you? Start with your timeline. Would you prefer to take portraits and group photos before the ceremony to free up time afterward, or would you rather save that time for later? Next, think about your personalities. Some couples love sharing emotions privately, while others want the big, emotional impact of that moment in front of their guests.

Logistics play a part too, like your ceremony time, venue layout, and natural lighting. In the end, both choices are equally meaningful, and the best decision is the one that feels most authentic to you.
