There’s a lot to consider when searching for your dream wedding photographer: their style, services, pricing, and so much more! But, finding a photographer you love is actually just the first step. While choosing a wedding photographer is an important decision, selecting the right package is just as big of a deal—no pressure!
Like weddings, photography packages aren’t one-size-fits-all. That’s why most photographers offer a range of different set packages, but many are also open to customizing options that fit your needs and preferences. The tricky part is actually figuring out exactly what you’ll need—the number of hours of coverage, additional services (like engagement shoots or second shooters), and the number of final edited photos.
To help you book with confidence, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about choosing the right wedding photography package for your day.
1. Consider Your Wedding Budget
Photography packages aren’t one-size-fits-all, hence why photographers offer a few different options for couples. Each package will have different offering at various price points. For example, more hours of coverage will come with a large price tag. Before hopping on a call with your photographer and discussing your options, you’ll need to have an idea of your budget.
Sit down with your partner and get an idea of the overall number you’re comfortable spending. Keeping that number in mind, you’ll also want to know how much of your overall budget you can allocate to each wedding detail. This includes your photographer, flowers, etc.
The most important piece of advice is to be open and honest about finances from the start. This will help your photographer give you an idea of what package will be right for you.

2. Determine Your Wedding Day Timeline
Once you’ve had the budget conversation (I know it’s not always the most fun), it’s time for the more exciting details, like your wedding day timeline. From that early morning wake-up call to the grand reception exit, you’ll want to prepare a rough outline of your day before meeting with your wedding photographer.
Don’t worry—this doesn’t have to be the final draft. Actually, most photographers will help perfect your timeline as the wedding day gets closer. But having a general idea gives you a better sense of how many hours of photography coverage you’ll need.
Elopements or micro weddings may only need 4–6 hours, while larger celebrations or cultural weddings could be more like 8–10 hours.
3. Discuss Your Priorities
Now that you have an idea of your budget and a rough draft timeline for your big day, it’s time to sit down with your partner and talk through your priorities. What matters most to each of you when it comes to photography? Make a list of those must-haves. Maybe it’s having every moment captured from start to finish, or it’s having a second shooter to make sure nothing is missed.
At the end of the day, every couple is different, so choose a package that best reflects what’s most important to you.

4. List Which Moments You Want Captured
Don’t forget to think about any specific moments you'd like to capture too. For example, if you’ve been dreaming of those sweet getting-ready photos with your crew in matching pajamas, you’ll probably want a package with longer coverage. But if you're more focused on the ceremony, a shorter package could be the perfect fit.
Here are a few special moments to consider before deciding how many hours of coverage you'll need:
- Getting ready portraits
- The first look
- Golden hour couple portraits
- Reception dancefloor coverage
Your wedding day is full of oh-so-special moments and choosing the right coverage (and photographer) ensures that none of them are missed.
5. Understand What’s Included in Packages
Take time to read through each package that your wedding photographer offers. Look at the number of coverage hours, turnaround time, how many edited images you’ll receive, and whether a sneak peek gallery is included. Make sure everything aligns with what you're looking for. And if you have any questions—don’t be afraid to reach out and ask!
