As a wedding photographer, one of the most common worries I hear from couples is that they’re “not photogenic” or that they’ll feel awkward in front of the camera. Newsflash: almost everyone feels that way—you are definitely not alone.
And it makes sense. On one of the most magical days of your life, there’s a camera on you for so many big (and small) moments. Of course, you want your photos to look perfect, but trust me, stressing about it won’t help.
The best way to put yourself at ease? Hiring the right photographer. Nerves are totally normal, but with the right photographer, those nerves fade quickly. It’s my job to help you feel confident, comfortable, and like your authentic self in front of the camera. So, to help ease your mind, here are a few of my tried-and-true tips for feeling comfortable while being photographed.
1. Get to Know Your Photographer Beforehand
One of the best ways to feel more comfortable in front of the camera is to get to know your photographer before the big day. Even a quick video call or coffee meetup can make such a difference. You want to make sure you vibe well with your wedding photographer for this reason. If your personalities don't mesh well together, this will heavily affect your comfort level. That's why I prioritize, at least, jumping on a call with couples before booking,
That’s also why I’m such a big fan of engagement sessions. Think of them as a trial run that lets you practice, loosen up, and see what it’s really like being in front of the lens. The more comfortable you are with me beforehand, the more natural and easy everything will feel on your wedding day.
2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
One of my favorite ways to get natural, relaxed photos is for couples to focus on each other instead of the camera. Pretend it’s just the two of you and ignore me for a bit—I’ll guide you, but the magic happens when you’re connecting with each other. Little prompts, like whispering something silly, walking hand-in-hand, or stealing a quick kiss, go a long way in creating real, authentic moments. Those genuine connections always shine far more than stiff poses ever could.
3. Movement is Your Best Friend
Movement is your best friend when it comes to feeling natural in front of the camera. Walking hand-in-hand, twirling in your dress, or even dancing around a bit creates candid, lively moments that look effortless in photos. It also takes your mind off “posing” and turns the session into something fun rather than stressful. Plus, the little in-between moments—the laughs, the spins, the playful bumps—often make some of my favorite shots of the day.
4. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer)
Trusting the process (and your photographer) is key to feeling comfortable in front of the camera. I’ve got lighting, angles, and prompts covered, so all you need to do is follow along and focus on each other. Almost every couple feels awkward while the photos are being taken—it always looks better in the gallery than it does in the moment! Relax, enjoy the experience, and trust that you’re going to love the results.
5. Pick and Outfit that’s Comfortable and Stylish
Choosing an outfit that’s both comfortable and stylish makes a huge difference in how relaxed you feel in front of the camera. Try on your outfits ahead of time so you know exactly how they fit and move—you’ll feel more confident and at ease. Even snapping a few selfies or playful photos together beforehand can help you loosen up and get comfortable being photographed. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in every shot.
6. Don’t Forget to Have Fun
Above all, don’t forget to have fun! Laugh at yourselves, embrace the messy or imperfect moments—they often make the best photos. Some of my favorite shots happen when couples forget the camera is even there. Remember, this isn’t about modeling for a magazine; it’s about capturing your story, your connection, and the joy of your day. Let go, enjoy the moment, and the photos will reflect every genuine emotion.
