There’s something so special about engagement sessions. Capturing that “just engaged” glow is an absolute dream, and it’s often one of the first things couples do after getting engaged. As a Vancouver wedding photographer, these sessions are some of my favorites—they’re relaxed, personal, and full of love.

But engagement sessions are about more than just beautiful photos. They give us a chance to get to know each other before the wedding day, get comfortable in front of the camera, and create a space where you can just be yourselves. Whether we’re exploring Stanley Park, strolling along the seawall, or finding a quiet spot in the mountains, each session is all about celebrating this moment in your love story.

From choosing the perfect location to figuring out what to wear, there’s a lot that goes into planning an engagement session. That’s where I come in! With years of experience capturing couples’ engagements, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to make the process easy and fun. Let’s dive in.

1. What an Engagement Session Is and Why It’s So Important

An engagement session is more than just a photo shoot—it’s a chance to celebrate this exciting season of your life and make memories together before the wedding day. Your engagement is such a special moment that you’ll want to look back on for years to come.

The goal is to capture genuine moments that reflect who you are as a couple. By the end of the session, you’ll not only have beautiful images but also feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera for your big day. Bonus: these photos aren’t just for your wedding—they’re perfect for displaying at home, sharing on social media, and using for save-the-dates and your wedding website.

2. Choosing the Perfect Location

Picking the right location for your engagement session can completely shape the look and feel of your photos. When deciding on a spot, think about the scenery, the overall vibe, and whether it holds personal meaning for you as a couple. In Vancouver, you’ve got so many options—from the iconic seawall and lush trails of Stanley Park, to quiet beaches, charming urban streets, or even mountaintop viewpoints with breathtaking city and ocean backdrops. Each location sets a different tone and helps tell your unique story.

3. Tips for What to Wear

What you wear for your engagement session plays more of a role than you might think. The clothing and accessories that you choose can completely elevate your photos, so it’s worth putting some thought into it. While you want to choose options that'll look stunning, you also want to aim for outfits that make you feel comfortable—comfort is key!

I always recommend choosing outfits with a bit of movement. Flowing fabrics and layers photograph beautifully, adding depth and a sense of romance to your images. Plus, they’re perfect if you’re feeling a little camera-shy—a flowy skirt or dress gives you something to play with, helping you feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera.

A good rule of thumb is to bring one casual outfit and one dressier option so you can capture different vibes in a single session.

4. What to Bring

Don't come empty-handed to your engagement session. Bringing a few thoughtful items can make your engagement session go smoothly and feel extra special. I always recommend packing touch-up essentials like makeup and a hairbrush. You'll also want to bring water and a pair of comfy shoes for walking between locations. And above all, bring your confidence and a sense of fun! The more relaxed and playful you are, the more natural and memorable your photos will be.

5. What to Expect During a Session with Me

During your engagement session, I’ll guide you with gentle prompts and natural posing suggestions to help capture authentic moments. Don’t worry about being “photogenic” and perfect—your engagement session is supposed to be relaxed and full of love and laughter. The best photos truly happen when you focus on each other rather than the camera. So, my goal is to make it feel effortless while capturing memories you’ll cherish forever.

7. How You Can Use Engagement Photos

Engagement photos are more than just a fun pre-wedding experience! They’re perfect for decorating your home, sharing on social media to celebrate this exciting season of your life, and even using them in the wedding planning process. You can use them for save-the-date cards, your wedding website, or even printed invitations. These photos capture your love story in a way that lasts long after your engagement.
